Well, as you all know we will be back at Main St. in Dunedin on Oct. 11th.

If you have never meet or taken a class from Glenwood Sherry, you are in for a real treat.  Glenwood (also know as "That Paint Guy") has had his own weekly PBS Show and is currently doing The Daytime Show on Channel 8 WFLA every Thursday.  He has been on numerous TV shows such as The Christopher Lowell Show and many others.  What a treat to have him do a class for us and be so gracious not to charge a fee for his time.

THE HISTORY OF FLORIDA'S GOLDEN PALETTE

Two women got together that saw the need for a Chapter of SALI to be in place in the state of Florida. After research and paperwork, networking and letter writing, the first organization meeting of the Florida Chapter was held on June 10, 2000 at The Sarasota School of Decorative Arts in Sarasota. Members of SALI from all over the state were contacted about this meeting and 27 people showed up for the first meeting. That showed us immediately that there was a need for a Chapter in Florida. Some of these members drove 4 hours to participate in the meeting. A great deal was accomplished on that day. The Executive Committee was established and a name was chosen. After so many wonderful ideas and much discussion, Florida's Golden Palette was chosen to depict many things. "Florida" so we will always be distinguished as the FIRST Chapter, "Golden" to emulate the 'Sunshine State' and Palette, well that one pretty much explains itself. Within the first week of our meeting, we had 33 members and completed all the paperwork necessary to receive our Charter in July at the Houston Convention. Currently FGP has 47 members and growing by leaps and bounds.

The History of SALI

A group of artists held their first organizational meeting in Atlanta, Georgia November 18, 1983 and the League officially incorporated in January 1984. SALI held it's first convention in September 1986. Since then membership has grown from 200 to over 3500. At the annual meeting and convention, members come together for five days of sharing, teaching, learning and networking.

Some of the accomplishments of SALI

1. November, 1987 the League supported financially and attended Press Day in New York for its members.

2. December, 1987 the League donated a decorated Christmas tree to the Smithsonian.
3.December, 1987 the League donated a decorated doll house to the Smithsonian with many members in attendance at the reception in Washington, D.C.

4. In 1989 SALI published a pattern book comprised of patterns donated, copyright free, by the membership.

5. In 1994 the SALI membership lent their talents to
the book Stenciling Techniques written by Jane Gauss.

6. With the royalties from the Stenciling Techniques book, Jane Gauss established the Adele Bishop Memorial Scholarship Fund which is still awarded each year.

7. In 1996 SALI published the second pattern book, "Animals" comprised of patterns donated, copyright free,
by the membership.
8. In just the last four years our chapters have completed the following philanthropic projects in the United States and Canada.

          3 Children's shelters
          3 Homeless shelters
          3 Libraries
          7 Ronald McDonald Houses
          3 Children's Hospitals
          3 Pregnancy Centers
          1 Family Stress Center Nursery
          3 Exhibitions of work
          2 Schools
          1 Non-profit education gift shop
          1 Museum
          3 Churches
          2 Day Care Centers
          1 Council of Aging Center
1 landmark, The Tinkers Swiss Museum Store National landmark.

The Chapters have taught school children and Brownie troops and donated to the Toys for Tots.
Each month the chapters teach each other the various crafts of stenciling, faux finishing and other decorative arts as well as learn about new products. Each member who can attend a convention shares that knowledge with other members who could not. The chapters hold monthly meetings, extra workshop, take trips to observe other
decorative artists' work and in general network for a deeper knowledge of the arts. Most chapters also have lending libraries containing tapes and books for the use of their members.
